Watches:Bell & Ross launch Vintage range

By Robert Johnston

But so successful was the design that it began to appear that this would become the only string to the brand's bow. Recently, it's come up with a series of special editions - some they loved (the ingenious BR 01-92 Radar), others they found more difficult (the skull-emblazoned BR 01 Airborne) - but the brand still appeared uncertain of its direction.

When you have come up with one of the most iconic case designs in modern watch making, where do you go? This has arguably been the issue facing Carlos Rosillo and Bruno Belamich of Paris-based company Bell & Ross. Founded in 1992, the company grabbed the watch world's attention with the amazingly pared-down square BR 01 range, based on an aircraft's gizmo panel.

That search, however, has been comprehensively concluded with the introduction of the Vintage range. Still much inspired by the world of aviation, the range is crisply retro in look, with the same easy-to-read dials and numerals of its square cousin, and although the face is 5mm smaller than the BR 01, it is no shrinking violet on the wrist.

To match the watch models of the Forties that inspired this collection, the crystal is highly domed - although the modern version will be a lot harder-wearing as sapphire crystal replaces the original glass. It also has an anti-reflective coating to make the dial simpler to read.
